Norths were out of the blocks very quickly and playing some excellent “dry weather” football in the slippery conditions, they had registered three tries and 20 points by the middle of the first half. The only question appeared to be by how far they would win this match by.
The rain got heavier and to their credit, Easts stepped up in defence. The Norths scoring spree was halted and the game settled into an arm wrestle until halftime where Norths led 20 points to nil.
In the second half, the Easts defence continued to get off their line very quickly and shut down the Norths attack. Easts managed to pull back one converted try early in the half and then later a second when Norths were reduced to 14 men following a yellow card.
Norths defence held in the final minutes and the game finished with Norths winning 20 points to 14. While the game did not pan out as play in the the first quarter had suggested, a win against Easts at Woollahra in the first game of the season is always worthwhile.
The Norths forward pack was strong all day with number 8 Hugh Sinclair and prop Gody Schuster the stand-outs. Liam Windon at fly-half and Sam Myers at fullback also had good games especially in the first half. Jac Cameron on the wing scored two tries and generally made good ground in attack and was strong in defence until replaced at halftime with a hamstring twinge.
