Men’s Summer 7’s – Tournament 1 Preview

Having performed well in the 2019 Spring 7’s series, the Northern Suburbs Shoremen head into their first task of the summer this weekend.

The Mick ‘Whale’ Curry 7’s up at Hamilton is the first of 2 tournaments to be played this preseason.

While a raft of players are unavailable it is a new look team from the team who ran around in November and December.

The team features a mix of experienced older players, some solid 1st grade players and a sprinkle of young talent that has joined the club.

The most pleasing thing about the 7’s program is the opportunity it provides across a number of avenues. Younger players are able to gain great experience from senior players like 1st Grade Fullback Sam Giltrap, while Charlie Radford a first year colts player fresh from Nudgee College (Brisbane) is able to jump straight into playing with his new club and teammates.

As well as a player like Connor Winchester, who got some valuable experience in first grade throughout 2019 has launched himself into the preseason and is in great physical shape, the 7s program provides him an opportunity to continue to develop his skills in a raw format and under real game pressure.

The Shoremen will face 3 tough pool games as they aim to progress to the cup semi finals. First up it will be Warringah, followed by Gordon Green and finishing with West Harbour who we shared many battles with through the 2019 series.
