Club Update from General Manager

Dear Members, Sponsors and Norths Community,

RE: Rugby Returns

On behalf of the Board, it is my pleasure to provide a further update on our confirmed return  to the field for the 2020 Shute Shield season.

The Board of Sydney Rugby Union has now confirmed a 13-week competition format with a regular 3-week final series starting Saturday, July 18th and culminating in a Grand Final on Saturday, October 31st.

A draw is being worked on at present and we hope to bring you this in the coming days.

With the inclusion of Penrith and Newcastle into the premier competition, both teams will add a new dimension to the competition.

Unfortunately, I have to inform you that we won’t be able to play at North Sydney Oval for the 2020 season. At the beginning of COVID-19, North Sydney Oval did not lift the cricket wicket.  We are advised by Council that this was due to:

  1. Lifting of the cricket pitch was scheduled for one week after Covid-19 lockdowns commenced around the country.
  2. Equipment required to lift the pitch was located in Victoria and was unable to cross the border.
  3. The cost of lifting and replacing the pitch exceeds $80,000 and due to the uncertainty around whether winter sports would commence, the Council decided to save this expense.  In the Club’s view, this was a prudent and acceptable decision made by the Council.

Additionally, Cricket Australia will claim their exclusive use rights of the oval from September 1st for their national domestic and international competitions which will be in the middle of our 2020 season.

The board and I have a plan, to secure strategic alternative venues for our ‘Home Games’ this season.

The Club is committed to fielding all 4 Grade, 3 Colts and our Women’s 7’s teams.  We are of the understanding a number of clubs have expressed the same desire, however, not all Clubs will be in a position to do this.  We will work closely with SRU to ensure all grades have a meaningful competition.

Finally, whilst the season will return, it is clear that it will be slightly different. The Club would like to thank our Members and Sponsors who have been amazing in their continued support and will provide further details on schedule at this is confirmed.

Thank you for your unwavering support at this time and extend our best wishes to all impacted by the current environment.

We are not far away now!

Kind Regards,
Jack Burey
