Meet Harry Burey, a premiership player with Norths in 2016, a Sydney Ray (NRC) in 2017 and currently Northern Suburbs 1st Grade Inside Centre.
Although Harry Burey is yet to tackle his biggest mountain.
Harry has teamed up with a group of close mates from hometown Wagga Wagga and will trek Mt Everest, this offseason all in the aim of finding a cure.
Like Harry, local Wagga couple Jeff and Carly Millar had never heard of Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T) until 18 months ago when they were told by doctors that they believed their son Charlie had the rare genetic disorder. Devastated and in disbelief, they would later learn that their little girl Zara, was also born with “A-T”.
What is A-T? Ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare and incurable disease often described as the worst parts of cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis. Throw in a dose of cancer and lung disease and you have a general picture of this relentless condition. This eventually leads to a loss of any movement or activity that requires the use of a muscle – eye movements, speaking, writing, swallowing, bladder control, breathing, coughing. Children with A-T are generally confined to a wheelchair between the ages of 8-10 years old and rarely survive beyond their 20s.
Harry will spend his offseason on a gruelling 12-day trek from Kathmandu to Mt Everest Base Camp in November in order to raise much needed funds and awareness of this condition.
Getting to know Harry …
Name: Harry Burey
Nickname/s: H, Bizz, Bizza, Harold, Dash hound, Heraldo
• What training are you doing in preparation?
In the next few months, I will be relying on Rugby Training with Northern Suburbs in Sydney and I’ll start adding in some long walks/hikes as well, I’ve also read that a few dates with the stair master 3000 at the local Gym will also be beneficial.
• What skill do you have that will be most useful to the group on the trek?
A large supply of fun facts, some will come in handy about local flora and fauna, some will just be entertaining others will be utterly useless.
• What will be the first song you add to the Everest playlist and why?
“I can feel you breath” by Faith Hill.
I’m sure there will be some heavy breathing going on as we make our way up the hill. Not only that I find it a real morale booster if there’s anything that can block out the physical pain it’s the sweet sound of Faith Hills voice.
• What would you do with your last $5?
Put it on #2 R6 Dapto Dogs
