Northern Suburbs have today appointed two new colts coaches for the upcoming 2018 season.
Lachlan Porteous (First Colts Head Coach) and Michael Smith (First Colts Assistant Coach), both former Norths 1st grade players have been tasked with leading the clubs colts program in 2018.
Having recently retired from playing and housing a desire to remain involved in the club, both Porteous and Smith naturally transitioned into coaching and haven’t looked back since.
On the announcement as Colts Head Coach, Porteous expressed a desire to pass on his knowledge to the Colts players saying “It’s an exciting opportunity for Smithy (Michael) and myself to have a real and tangible impact on the next generation of North’s players”
Adding that “while the focus will be to proved a world class developmental rugby experience, the overarching objective of the Colts program is to cultivate and transition players from colts into grade, and hopefully onto high honors”
The former club 7’s and 3rd grade coach believes the colts are the future of the club and therefore its “imperative that we develop not only their skills but their knowledge and character in order to provide them the best opportunity to progress through to grade and hopefully higher”.
Porteous will be supported by Michael Smith, who before suffering a major hip injury at the beginning of 2017 season, played a key role in claiming both the 2016 Shute Shield & 2017 Australian Club Championship.
The 2016 1st Grade Best and Fairest expressed his excitement at coaching the clubs colts, saying “while I hadn’t planned on finishing my playing days so soon, it’s happened and now I’m really looking forward to making a difference for the next crop coming through”
Northern Suburbs Head Coach Shannon Fraser expressed his delight at the appointment of Porteous and Smith saying “the club understands the importance of maintaining a strong colts program in achieving sustainable success. The appointment of Lachlan and Michael to the first colts reflects the club’s commitment to delivering a strong colts program in 2018”
Fraser added “Lachlan and Michael have both recently been involved in the club’s grade program and understand the importance of a collaborative approach and aligning the Colts program with that of the wider club”
Lachlan will replace outgoing coach Joel Rivers who after three seasons at the helm has decided to take a break from club coaching.
“Joel (Rivers) has done a fantastic job over the past three seasons, building a strong player base and performance culture, providing an excellent foundation to build upon moving forward”
“We thank Joel for his significant contribution to the club’s colts program and wish him all the best in future” Fraser added
Northern Suburbs will return to training on Tuesday, January 16th at the Shore School Sports Field from 6 pm.
