We started off fresh in February with 4 girls, unfortunately, no returning faces from last year and have built nicely to a squad of around 15 girls. A lot of our side previously had minimal to no rugby experience.

The girls had a tough first up trials back in March against Hunters Hill and Gordon which was a good indicator as to the level we needed to be at with a month to work on things we then gradually increased our squad numbers and encountered Manly in a friendly which was a tough outing for the girls again but also showed us the level to strive towards as Manly had been around for a number of seasons.

A week can make a lot of difference in rugby and we managed to turn the tables and beat manly on their home ground on their ladies day in a brilliant display of rugby, needless to say they’ve been seeking revenge on us ever since.

Since then the girls have participated in 3 rounds of the Sydney Women’s 7’s competition which goes for 7 rounds that runs a tournament every 3-4 weeks up till the end of August. After not participating in the first tournament the girls have really stamped there place in the club women’s 7s land with a 2nd place finish in Rd 2.

For a lot of the girls, this was their first ever tournament day, so very commendable effort and it was only a try right on the buzzer that stopped us from taking the glory here.

The girls followed this up with a commendable 4th place in Rd 3 a tough semi final outing against Sydney Uni academy again showing the level of rugby we need to build towards to compete with these top sides. A fortnight ago was our toughest outing yet for Rd 4 of the Sydney Womens 7s, resulting in a 5th place finish came up against Easts and Randwick in pool games. both sides with a few years of 7s experience in club land. Plenty to take out though and improve on going forward into the final 3 rounds.

We are at the mid point in the season and to see the progression of these girls from when they first started has been tremendous, there’s still along way to go for this side to really reach their potential and assert themselves as a dominant force in the Sydney Women’s club scene but all things are pointing up.

So make sure you get out and support our Norths Sirens, as they look to finish off the 2019 season strong and move into establishing themselves as a mainstay in the Sydney Women’s Rugby comps.
