Two Northern Suburbs players, Hugh Taylor and Will Connelly will proudly represent their Country, Club and Universities this week in the 8th edition of the World University Rugby 7’s Championships.
The pair flew out to host city Swakopmund, Namibia on Sunday morning following their wins over Gordon just 24 hours earlier.
The World University 7’s will take place on July 12th – 14th as the Aussie Men’s team will be looking to defend their Gold Medal placing from the 2016 Championships where they knocked over Great Britain in the Final.
Will Connelly (UTS) has enjoyed a whirlwind fortnight with a late call up to debut in 1st Grade against Eastwood (Round 12). Connelly was again among the best on field in 1st Grades Round 13 win over Gordon on Saturday.
Not originally selected in the squad, the call up came as somewhat of a shock to Connelly after injuries hit the main squad. Emphatic about the opportunity Will says “it’s a great opportunity to travel and play a bit of 7’s and meet some other boys from around the country, it should be pretty good”.
Hugh Taylor (Sydney University/St Andrews) had to overcome his own injuries to confirm his place in the side. After dislocating his thumb in Round 7 v Parramatta, Hugh only returned in Round 12 via 3rd Grade to confirm his fitness ahead of the tournament.
With over 300 athletes expected to descend into Namibia and showcase their rugby sevens capabilities across 16 male and 12 female teams, “there is much excitement building up towards having to visit the second most visited tourist town in Sub Saharan Africa which also happens to be the only place in the world where the Desert Meets the Ocean”.
We wish Hugh and Will all the best and look forward to them bringing home a medal.
