The Norths Redbacks Women’s 7’s gathered at the Waratahs Head Office on Saturday night in preparation for their exhibition game against Souths.
It wasn’t long before we were ushered down into the change rooms and the girls began to sense the special opportunity that they were about to experience.
Once ready the nerves began to show through however our inspirational captain Amelia Jackson spoke to the team and calmed them down. Unfortunately Amelia was unable to play due an injury suffered playing for NSW at the Nationals and it was up to Kate Lew to over the captaincy and get the team focused.
We were soon taken to our warm up area and the girls started running through there plays and moves and the Redbacks were looking very sharp.
We walked out onto Allianz Stadium at half time in the main game and the 17,000 plus crowd were immediately apparent.
The game was a little scrappy to start with but this was due to the fact that the Redbacks hadn’t played for 8 weeks coupled with a combination of nerves and adrenalin.
Play moved back and forth with the Redbacks building some pressure before Bronte Stovin-Smith scored. Play continued at a brisk pace on a surprisingly wet field when South’s made a break only to be run down by Maddy Duncan. Souths built pressure and the Redbacks didn’t number up and Souths scored out wide 5 all.
As the game entered its final stages the Redbacks built pressure and manged to retain possession before Margaret Watson went over wide to score 10-5 Norths Redbacks win.
All the girls played well and enjoyed themselves as we build towards the next 7’s season. A special mention to Lucy Hanrahan who travelled from Bathurst to be at the game even though she was unable to play as she still recovers from injury.
